About this clinic

This October, Quinte Working Equitation and Jamesview Dressage in Shannonville are hosting two days with classical Portuguese trainer and Masters working equitation rider Tiago Cantante.

Tiago trained in Classical Equitation under Portuguese riding masters, and in 2018 that same passion for the Lusitano brought him to Canada, where he joined Elio and Louisa Leal at Canadian Lusitanos to breed, train, and develop horses. He's a Masters Level Working Equitation rider who has competed internationally under WAWE, and he has a real gift with young horses and with the difficult ones. Horses tend to leave him softer and more athletic than they arrived.

Day One (Saturday) is Classical Dressage Foundations, working one-on-one through the Portuguese classical system. That tradition is built around lightness: a horse that carries itself, engages and pushes from behind, and responds to quiet aids. Sunday takes that work into the obstacles and puts it to the test.

Working Equitation is the fastest-growing equestrian sport in North America, and grew out of the working traditions of the Iberian Peninsula, where horses needed to be agile, responsive, brave, and completely in tune with their riders. Tiago comes from that world, and teaches it with the mechanics attached: where the horse needs to be balanced before a turn, what your body is telling your horse as you reach for the gate, why a horse rushes and what to do about it.

This clinic is open to all riding backgrounds — dressage, western, hunter, jumper, eventer, or recreational! Riders new to Working Equitation are especially welcome. Spots are limited, and preference is given to riders registering for both days.

Program

Two days of learning

Day 1 · Oct 3, 2026

Classical Dressage Foundations

Private 45-min Lessons

One-on-one lessons, working through the Portuguese classical system. That tradition is built around lightness: a horse that carries itself, engages and pushes from behind, and responds to quiet aids. Learn about the classical approach to biomechanics on both ends of the reins: How your horse balances, how your body influences the horse, and the mobilization of both horse and rider. Small changes in a rider's seat and alignment often produce changes in the horse! Riders of all disciplines and traditions will benefit from this session.

  • Rider seat, alignment, and how your position influences the horse
  • Self-carriage and developing pushing power from behind
  • Mobilization and suppleness of horse and rider
  • Straightness and balance through turns and transitions
  • Refining the aids

Day 2 · Oct 4, 2026

Working Equitation Obstacles

Semi-Private 75-min Lessons

Tiago teaches the obstacles with the mechanics of each: Where the horse needs to be balanced before a turn, what your body is telling your horse as you reach for the gate, or why a horse rushes through obstacles like the bridge and what to do about it. This session will put Saturday's dressage work to the test! The longer lesson time gives everyone time to learn and process, and to watch another horse and rider work through the same obstacle you just rode. Group sizes 2-3 riders.

  • Balance and preparation for the different obstacles
  • Rider positioning, and how this impacts obstacle execution
  • Obstacles like: Bridge, slalom, barrels, figure 8, Garrocha/bull line, and more
  • Rhythm and pace, and handling horses that rush and anticipate
  • Planning lines between obstacles and using space effectively

Tiago Cantante

Masters Level Working Equitation Rider

Tiago Cantante

Tiago was born in Portugal in 1985 and drawn to Lusitanos early on. He trained in Classical Equitation under Portuguese riding masters and went on to ride as a cavaleiro in the Portuguese mounted bullfighting tradition, a discipline that demands a horse and rider in perfect sync.

In 2018, that same passion for the Lusitano brought him to Canada, where he joined Elio and Louisa Leal at Canadian Lusitanos to breed, train, and develop horses. He's since built a reputation for starting young horses well and untangling difficult ones. Horses that arrive tense, crooked, or shut down tend to leave him strong, balanced, and genuinely athletic.

That foundation carries straight into Working Equitation, where Tiago rides at the Masters level and has competed in international WAWE competitions.

As an instructor, he's known for making high-level work feel accessible; his focus is on breaking movements down into pieces a rider can actually feel and reproduce, rather than something to admire from the sidelines.
